Step 8C - Better User Experience

Benefits from an improved user desktop computing experience can be seen in greater reliability and reduced downtime, faster login times, easier roaming access, and often better performance than PCs.

Reduced user downtime from faster resolution of desktop problems provides a significant financial benefit. Westerly Public School District estimated the time needed to resolve desktop problems was cut from one hour to five minutes with VDI, while Henry County Hospital found VDI often cut the time to fix desktop problems from days to 20-30 minutes.

You can calculate annual savings from reduced user downtime by the following steps:

  1. convert the duration of the estimated downtime saved in hours per month to hours per year by multiplying by 12,
  2. multiply this by the number of users impacted (typically this is the same as the number of VDI seats being deployed),
  3. multiply this by their average fully burdened salary per hour, which can be calculated by dividing the annual salary by the number of work hours in a year (i.e. 1,920 work hours/year calculated from 40 hours per week by 48 work weeks/year).

Eliminating just one hour of user downtime per month can save $563 annually for every VDI seat, assuming a fully burdened salary of $90,000 per user.

User experience benefits can also have an added impact on revenue for billable employees.  For example, attorneys at Winthrop & Weinstine were able to increase their billable time by 30 minutes each day solely from rapid access to their Pano System virtual desktops, adding to the billed revenue directly.
