Pano Direct Service provides the following key benefits:
- Native Windows driver support ensure compatibility with a broad range of printers, scanners, and other USB peripherals
- Light-weight design minimizes load placed on hypervisor server and reduces CPU/RAM allocations
- Deployment flexibility from support for 32-bit Windows XP and either 32- or 64-bit Windows 7
- Purpose-built for virtual desktops using the Pano Direct Protocol to connect desktop virtual machines and the Pano Zero Clients
Pano Direct Service is also a key component in supporting USB peripherals. When a USB peripheral such as a USB thumb drive is inserted into a Pano Zero Client, Pano Desktop Service and the Pano Controller work in conjunction to enforce the defined usage policies. Pano Direct Service will allow the USB operation and connection into Windows only if the user is authorized for the particular device and operation.
Pano Direct Service installs as a lightweight Windows service in each desktop virtual machine (DVM) and has the following requirements:
Network Capabilities – to provide an optimal user experience, Pano Zero Clients require a LAN connection of 100 Mbps or more to the Pano Controller and desktop virtual machine servers. High bandwidth connections between the hypervisor servers and the storage servers or SANs used to hold desktop virtual machine images is also recommended. Connecting to Panos over a WAN is not recommended because of user experience limitations from the relatively high latency and low bandwidth of most WANs.
Supported USB Devices – Pano Direct Service supports a wide range of common USB devices – for more details refer to the online help topics on Supported Non-Isochronous USB devices and Supported Isochronous USB devices. If you have specialized USB devices not listed as supported, please check with Pano Logic Sales.
Appropriate Users/Applications – while the new generation of Pano Zero Clients provide excellent desktop performance for virtually all task and knowledge workers, including web-based audio/video playback and communications, we don't suggest you deploy them to power users using multimedia content creation suites, trying to play full-screen or high-definition video, or who need to run graphically-intensive applications such as CAD/CAM.
Licensing Windows - use of Microsoft's Windows XP Professional or Windows 7 in a virtual machine requires a Windows Virtual Desktop Access (VDA) device-based subscription license. Please contact your Microsoft representative, visit the Microsoft Virtualization web page or download the Microsoft VDA licensing brochure for more information.

In addition to support for USB keyboards and mice, the Pano Direct Service lets you use the three USB ports on the Pano Device to connect the following USB device types, including composite devices (often called all-in-one solutions):
- Isochronous audio/video devices like USB headsets, speakers, microphones and webcams
- USB flash drives, hard drives and mass storage devices
- USB CD/ DVD readers/burners and floppy drives
- printers and scanners, including business card scanners
- USB hubs and USB-to-serial converters
- RIM BlackBerry and Apple iPod
- touch screen displays
- and other USB devices
The Pano Direct Service even allows the use of native Windows drivers for a wide range of other specialized USB peripherals devices such as credit card readers and modems used in retail point-of-sale terminals or data acquisition devices used on manufacturing plant floor equipment. Support for native drivers generally means that if it runs on a PC, it will run on a Pano Zero Client.
