CloudTop on a Sunday Afternoon
Parmeet Chaddha - EVP, Products & Technology
We are in year 2015 on a Sunday afternoon in a ‘living workroom’ of a suburban home. “Dad!!! I just finished watching ‘Free Willy 8’ and want to get going with my English paper but my CloudTop is not working. The paper is due tomorrow morning,” says the 12-year old. The historically unappreciated domestic tech support, also known as ‘Dad’, responds – “Call 1-800-Comcast!”
For a billion+ users of personal computing devices – desktops, laptops, tablets – this might seem far-fetched. The reality is that the traditional personal computing device is already decomposing across various dimensions – entertainment-vs-productivity tool, deskbound-vs-mobile device, tethered-vs-wireless device. While the Windows operating system has defined the personal computing paradigm, the utility of this paradigm has run its course – in particular, the productivity tool usage of the traditional desktop. The flight-to-cloud is already carrying the cargo of data and applications away from the desktop. This is soon to be followed by all compute abandoning the desktop and moving into the Cloud. With that will go the unsustainable management cost of the client-server desktop – obviously, to be replaced by the utility subscription cost of a CloudTop service.
As data moves to the Cloud, data loss at the desktop is prevented.
As applications move to the Cloud, availability and performance problems are mitigated.
But as compute moves to the Cloud, operating system AND drivers along with all the associated burdens of security, break-fix and endpoint management end!
What is left behind is a CloudTop box – a simple access point to all data, applications and drivers. Better yet, watching the skyrocketing energy costs, if such an access point only consumes a handful (read, single digits) of watts then you have a Pano!
You take a very expensive $5K TCO of a traditional desktop, dissolve it down to a $29.99/month CloudTop service, and suddenly you have a very relieved domestic tech support Dad. While the benefits on the home-front are in the future, virtualizing the desktop and deploying a minimal endpoint, such as Pano Zero Client, is delivering 80%+ TCO advantage to enterprise IT today.
Ten minutes later in our 2015 suburban ‘living workroom’, the 12-year-old says, “Dad, the service is back up. Our 3-month free special on CloudTop expired and you never paid the subscription for last month! Mom just got it restored.” And, you thought that Dad will not be blamed anymore!
